Mr. Hughes and I had so much fun visiting our kindergarten classrooms for Read Across America. Our Johnson Parent Teacher Organization funded one book for each child. Our kindergarten teachers took the care to pick out a book for each child. Our kindergartners were so excited about the books and our visit.

Mr. Hughes, as always, entertained the children. They were delighted when he brought his special coloring book. On the first read the book had nothing in it. With the help of the children chanting read, read, read, the book all of a sudden had pictures in it. Wow! They got really excited when Mr. Hughes had them chant read, read, read again, and the whole book then had color! They were amazed. Mr. Hughes connected the magic of this book to the magic they experience when they learn to read.

Each time we called a students name, they responded with various words of gratitude. We heard, “Thank you!” or “I love unicorns” or “I can’t wait to read my book.” As we all know, Read Across America promotes the importance of reading. The day is intended to spark the motivation to pick up a book. We hope our kindergartners find a moment over Spring Break to read their new books!

Thank you to our JPTO, our kindergarten teachers, and Mr. Hughes for making it all happen!
